CHOOSING THE RIGHT PUPPY

It is a sad fact that many dog shelters are bursting at the seams with unwanted dogs.  For many owners, what starts out as a fun and exciting adventure into puppy ownership turns into a nightmare of all proportions.  Choosing the right puppy is one of the most important decisions you will make to ensure yours and your dogs long term experiences are positive and rewarding.

It is important to understand that nearly all dog breeds were originally bred for working purposes.  Breeding and breed evolvement was based on developing key traits that made dogs suitable for a specific job at hand.  Looking at the original working purpose of a particular breed gives prospective owners a clue as to the likely characteristics that breed will have.

HOUSETRAINING

Housetraining your puppy could save his life!

That's not a joke.  Many dogs are surrendered to shelters mainly because they aren't properly housetrained.  Why?  Well, first he ruins your floors.  You put him outside , but he barks and digs up the yard.  You put him in the basement and realize that maybe this dog thing wasn't such a good idea after all.

Don't be fooled if your puppy happens to get it right for the first few weeks.  Start now, and stick with it until your pup really has NO accidents.  Housetraining isn't great fun, but it's crucial.  And it give you the dog you always dreamed of - the one living in your home, lying peacefully by your side.

Let Obedience Dynamics show you how to properly housetrain your new pup!

CRATE TRAINING

As seen by some pet owners:  "It's like living in jail - it's cruel - I'd never put my dog in a cage!"

For many typical pet owners, this is their first reaction.  Being human beings who value freedom, they envision crates as inhumane.  Considering your pet as an extension of your human family, you do not wish to inflict unjust punishment upon your 4 legged child.  Ask yourself if you would raise a child without a playpen or a crib to sleep in?

As perceived by the dog:  "I love having a place of my own!  I have my blanket, my favorite toys, nobody bothers me in here.  It's all mine!"

Okay, so this isn't a direct quote, but try to see a crate from another point of view.  Dogs have a den instinct.  The dog crate helps to satisfy this instinct.  You see it as closed in - he sees it as security.  You may object to being controlled - he only wants to please you and do whatever you wish.  To you it's a "cage" - to him its his "home".

TRACKING

The dog sport of tracking is very "dog friendly".  Dogs come to class knowing more about tracking than we humans will ever understand!  All tracking classes will be held outside in the fields.  Yes, there are ticks, weeds, and bugs.  All dogs can track and sniff on the ground to "read the daily dog news" every chance they get.  In class, handlers will learn how to motivate their dog to track the trail the handler wants to work rather than the latest mouse track or deer trail.  Talk to any tracking handler and they will tell you their dog gets really excited to get out on a track!

The handler will learn how to "read" their dog and communicate through the tracking line and praise with forward motion.  The dog will begin to discern the differences between fresh tracks, aged tracks, wind direction and ground cover changes.

Tracking can be amazing!
